One hundred thirty-three female Japanese university students completed a questionnaire.Results suggested that( 1) perceivers displayed self-criticism when exposed to an acquaintance's lowauthenticityself-effacing presentation, (2) perceivers displayed intentions towards self-improvementwhen exposed to a friend's high-authenticity self-effacing presentation,( 3) and individuals high in internalizationof self-effacing presentational norms always experience self-criticism as a result of exposureto others' self-effacing presentation. Conversely, the presence of self-criticism in individualslow in internalization of self-effacing presentational norms was influenced by interpersonal relationshipsand the authenticity of self-presentation.
