Analysis of these texts indicates, as I have previously expressed, that friendships between higy-ranking samurai, may have developed during the Genroku period of the Edo era. How do the letters from Matsudaira Yamatonokami Motochika to Okabe Minonokami Nagayasu contribute to our understanding of these relationships? However, it is impossible to expect undergraduate students―in a curator education course on ancient record―to make satisfactory sense of such correspondence without support. Generally speaking, student's ability to understand old texts in Kanji or Kanbun, borrowed Chinese hieroglyphs, is entirely insufficient. As this difficulty is not limited to our university, it seems all the more inappropriate to expect students to exploit genuine, ancient, hand-written materials. Therefore, I have conducted my course by having students handle real manuscripts shile also reading published \"Kansei Jushukafu\" or \"Edobakufu Nikki\" to help them get acquainted with paleography. Even with the resulting slow pace, we managed to cover three genuine documents in 2014.
