This is a series of 10 paintings depicting ten Buddhist monks－the Buddha's disciples. In Japan, iconography of the Buddha's ten disciples dates back to the 8th century. Serizawa created his own \"Portraits of the Disciples of the Buddha\" with reference to several statues of the ten disciples made between the 8th and 13th centuries. He also used the encyclopedia of Buddha statues from the Edo period as a reference.
