The right half of the painting depicts the comings and goings of Buddha. On the other hand, the  left half depicts a waterfall, a cave and pilgrims. Based on these motifs, it is presumed that the painting represents the legend of Amidagataki Waterfall on the slopes of Mt.Hakusan, Gifu Prefecture. According to the legend, a 16th century Buddhist monk was praying in a cave at Amidagataki Falls when Amitabha appeared to him.\n Amidagataki Falls is thus one of the sacred sites of Mt.Hakusan. From the 18th century onward, people besides Buddhist monks began to climb Mt.Hakusan more frequently, and Amidagataki became the subject of travelogues, poems and painting.
